Jewish Dems Decry Expected Senate Vote to Defund Planned Parenthood

July 29, 2015

In the coming days, the U.S. Senate is expected to vote on whether or not to strip Planned Parenthood of any federal funding. The National Jewish Democratic Council criticized the vote as unfairly targeting women and attempting to deny them the important health care they deserve.

Sunita Leeds, a member of the NJDC Executive Committee, stated,

“This proposed vote by the Senate is a political stunt that serves no practical purpose other than demonstrating to women where the Republican Party stands on issues of their health and privacy. Planned Parenthood is one of the most important organizations we have in terms of providing quality health care to millions of women. While defending a woman’s right to make health care decisions regarding her own body is just one of the many services the organization provides, 91% of American Jews – including 77% of Jewish Republicans – are firmly pro-choice. This is an issue that the American Jewish community is in lockstep agreement on. This bill is an attack on women’s rights, and the Republican Senators who voted for it today should be ashamed.”
