Lara Friedman demonstrates that of the nine most recent presidents, President Barack Obama is the only one who has completely shielded Israel from adverse U.N. Security Council resolutions. Friedman marshals these facts to argue that President Obama should, just this once, support a resolution that Israel opposes, but the administration made clear last week that it will oppose any resolutions that are biased against Israel.
It shouldn't surprise anyone that President Obama is so good on Israel. President Obama told Jeff Goldberg last year that "There's a direct line between supporting the right of the Jewish people to have a homeland and to feel safe and free of discrimination and persecution, and the right of African Americans to vote and have equal protection under the law. These things are indivisible in my mind." Talk about feeling it in your kishkes. And yet as Goldberg told an audience at Northwestern on Thursday evening, the pro-Israel community has failed to pick up on this theme.
What has President Obama done for Israel lately? The administration "firmly shut the door" on support for any U.N. Security Council resolutions that are one-sided or biased against Israel. The administration stated that it will not allow Iran access to U.S. dollars.
Writing from Israel, Raviv Drucker reminds us that the dire predictions about what would happen under the Iran deal have not come true:
Iranian payments to Hezbollah and Hamas haven't grown, even though that famous $100 billion the Iranians were to get was unfrozen back in January. Iran is honoring the agreement, and its nuclear program has been set back; in other words, even if the Iranians were to blatantly violate the agreement, it would take them, according to [Israel's] defense establishment, more time to obtain the bomb than it would have taken them had the agreement not been signed. So far, even the claim that Western companies would run like maniacs to do business with Iran has proven exaggerated, while in Iran's recent parliamentary elections, the most moderate human material the Islamic Republic is capable of producing won.
