NJDC Commends President’s Decision on Stem Cells

Today, Ira N. Forman, Executive Director of the National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC), released the following statement praising the Executive Order lifting the ban on embryonic stem cell research:

The National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC) commends President Barack Obama’s decision today to sign an Executive Order lifting restrictions on federally funded embryonic stem cell research. Obama has put science over politics by removing the Bush administration’s ban on this promising medical research.

Embryonic stem cell research has the potential to help find new treatments, or even cures, for those individuals suffering from degenerative diseases such as cancer, diabetes, Parkinson’s, ALS, and Alzheimer’s.

We applaud Obama for pursuing embryonic stem cell research and continuing to advance this critical medical research in a responsible way.

re: “lifting the ban on embryonic stem cell research” -
There hasn’t BEEN a ban on embryonic stem cell research, or any stem cell research for that matter - just the taxpayer funding of it…
and #2 - adult stem cells have thus far been proven efficacious.
Why spend hard-earned TAXPAYER (that’s yours and mine) dollars on something that isn’t nearly as promising as adult stem cells?  It makes no sense.

and others.

The issue then, is how the research is funded, not that it is done or not.  I tend to side with the idea that the people who have brought us the educational system, the bankrupting of the Social Security System, Medicare, etc. should NOT be involved in this at all.  Let free enterprise do it.  “I’m from the government and I’m here to help.”  RUN and run like the wind.
