Ron Paul: Still A Contender

According to the recent straw poll conducted at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference—in which Texas Republican Representative Ron Paul (R-TX) missed a first place finish by a single vote—Paul still remains a serious contender in the eyes of the Republican base for the 2012 presidential nomination. As David A. Harris, NJDC’s President, previously noted when Paul won the CPAC straw poll:

“Ron Paul is a man who misses no opportunity in Congress to vote against the U.S.-Israel relationship, but his record goes much deeper than that. From his unacceptable statements about Gaza, to the Ron Paul newsletter wondering aloud if the 1993 World Trade Center bombing was perpetrated by Israel, Paul is beyond the pale.

“The fact that the hearts and souls of the conservative movement have a clearly expressed preference for Ron Paul as their 2012 candidate demonstrates yet again the vast and growing chasm between the American Jewish community and the Republican, conservative movement,”

Paul also appears to be closely associated with the Tea Party movement, even going so far as to defend the movement from charges for its apparent links to inappropriate political rhetoric and criminal acts against elected officials. The Tea Party’s seemingly anti-government worldview, coupled with the apparent rise in Confederate nostalgia by Republican leaders, appears to be pushing the Republican Party further towards the fringes and away from Jewish voters.
