Ahmadinejad: Rivals Using Hitler’s Tactics

Several news services, including the AP and Agenzia Giornalistica Italia (Italian Journalist Agency) are reporting that despite denying the Holocaust, Iranian President is familiar enough with the Third Reich to refer to his rivals as running a campaign reminiscent of Joseph Goebbels.

Goebbels, Hitler’s master propagandist, was the dictator of the Nazi regime’s cultural life. He became infamous for stereotyping Jews, as well as his control of press, film and radio to maintain morale amongst the German people.

Ahmadinejad, who is locked in a tight battle for the Iranian Presidency, recently accused his rival, former President Mir Hossein Mousavi of using smear tactics similar to that of Goebbels. “They applied the methods of [Josef] Goebbels, propaganda minister of Hitler,” Ahmadinejad said, “They used this method of psychological war against our nation.”

He also stated that, “These insults against the government represent a return to Hitler’s methods.”

It is certainly strange that despite fiercely denying the Holocaust, Ahmadinejad still found time to learn about the inner circle of Hitler, including top lieutenants like Goebbels. Iran’s presidential elections are scheduled for Friday, with Mousavi reportedly having an edge in the polls, buoyed by young voters.
