Humorless Satire: “Concert for Holocaust Survivors Is Condemned”

I just read a piece, “Concert for Holocaust Survivors Is Condemned,” that would have been appropriately titled for a satiric Onion article. This article was in the news section of The New York Times.

Here’s an exerpt:

Palestinian political activists from the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank on Sunday condemned a camp youth orchestra’s performance for Holocaust survivors in Israel last week, and said they were banning the orchestra’s director, an Israeli Arab woman, from entering the camp.

In an unusual, almost surreal encounter, a group of 13 young musicians from the Jenin camp, ages 12 to 17, played Wednesday for about 30 elderly Holocaust survivors at a social club in the Israeli town of Holon, just south of Tel Aviv. The hourlong concert was a central event of Israel’s annual Good Deeds Day, sponsored by an Israeli billionaire.

Seriously?! How does anyone condemn a youth orchestra’s performance for Holocaust survivors?

Not only did Palestinian authorities condemn the performance, but they shut the youth orchestra down.

This is tragic not just for the survivors but for the young performers. How do you think they feel?

One more proof that the Palestinians are in no way ready to make peace and normalize relations with Israel.  Israel should simply accept that fact, go about its business accordingly, and stop beating its head against a stone wall trying to make peace with the Palestinians.

It’s sad. It’s unfortunate.  Given the recent problems that Israel has caused in Gaza and the West Bank, it is understandable.  That makes the situation even more sad.

It’s quite obvious that the Palestinians will not be happy until the State of Israel no longer exists. These people blow up their own children - so how can they care about anyone else or peace.

I agree with Pat about how sad and unfortunate but understandable this reaction is, given Israels’ actions including dropping of white phosphorous on Gaza.  But the similarity of the Gazan’s plight and what happened during the Holocaust, especially for instance the “Warsaw Ghetto” should never be forgotten.  “Do not be a victim.  Do not be a perpetrator but most of all do not be a bystander”.

As was once said about Yassir Arafat - the Palestinians never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity! How sad and telling about how far folks will go to perpetuate the hatred.
