House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) extended her wishes for a shanah tovah—a sweet new year. Pelosi said:
Rosh Hashanah is an opportunity for Jewish families worldwide to reflect and rejoice, to commemorate the year that’s past and celebrate the year yet to come. It is a moment for repentance and prayer, a time of renewal, remembrance, and introspection, a chance to look forward with hope to a future of health and happiness.
As the Jewish community marks a new year, Americans should rededicate ourselves to the promise of pluralism and diversity, to the idea that ‘out of many, we are one.’ In a time of economic hardship and trial, we must open our hands and hearts to our neighbors, lift up the less fortunate, and treat others with generosity, dignity, and respect. And we must act on the values embedded in the fabric of our country’s history: the pursuit of peace and the search for justice; the embrace of the common good; the perfection of our nation and the world.
May this Rosh Hashanah usher in a year of peace and security for the people and the state of Israel. May this be a year of joy and good fortune for Jewish families throughout our country and across the globe. Shanah tovah u’metukah - may you have a happy, healthy, sweet new year.
