President Barack Obama selected Dr. Regina Benjamin as the U.S. surgeon general yesterday.
Benjamin is known for establishing a rural health clinic in Bayou La Batre, AL. The clinic was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and a rebuilt clinic burned down before it could open.
According to the New York Times, Benjamin became president of the Alabama Medical Association in 2002, and was the first African-American woman to be president of a state medical society in the United States.
