Norman J. Orenstein, resident scholar at the conservative-leaning American Enterprise Institute (AEI), wrote a scathing critique of Republican rhetoric against President Barack Obama for The Washington Post. In particular, Orenstein railed against the charges that Obama is a socialist by citing the many Republican ideas that have been present in Obama’s major policies, including health care reform and the stimulus package.
Furthermore, in stark contrast to many of his cohorts at AEI, Orenstein wrote that he considers Obama to be a “mainstream, pragmatic moderate operating in the center of American politics” and implied in the piece that baseless Republican smears are drastically skewing the truth.
Orenstein concluded his piece asking if Newt Gingrich, one of the leading proponents of the “socialist” smear, actually “believe[s] that [expletive].”
