The National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC) welcomes President Barack Obama’s nomination of Solicitor General Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court of the United States. Ira N. Forman, NJDC CEO, issued the following statement about the nomination:
“NJDC praises President Obama’s nomination of Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court. She is a uniquely accomplished candidate with impressive academic and professional qualifications. Kagan brings with her a commitment to upholding our Constitutional values and a deep understanding of the needs of ordinary Americans. She will be a welcome addition to a Court that has become increasingly divided in favor of corporate interests and the wealthy.
Kagan’s nomination also represents an important step forward as women continue to take their rightful place on our nation’s highest court, as her confirmation would bring us to the historic precedent of three women seated on the Court at the same time. As American Jews, we also take special pride in seeing another member of our community nominated to the highest court in the land. We look forward to an expeditious and fair confirmation hearing, and a speedy and successful confirmation vote in the full Senate before the Court convenes in the fall.”
Great choice!
FANTASTIC!
I am so excited. Elena is remarkable in her talents, intellect, temperament and ability to work with people. How rare that combination is! I worked with her on projects for the Harvard Law School, and I came away with the conclusion that Harvard was very lucky to have her as the Dean.
She is brilliant..the Repugs will hate her for that…
Get her on The Supremes as quickly as possible…Three woman is a good start toward diversity on the High Court…...we need an Asian, a Hispanic and a Native American.too!
An excellent choice.
Superb choice.
Nice to see another smart Jewish woman in a position of influence!
She seems an astute choice for the position; feel good just learning someone like her exists!
Another Jewish broad on the Supreme Court! Mazel tov!!
A superb choice—from the liberal side of the spectrum, thoughtful, knowledgable, balanced and possessed with the skill of persuasion.
I read the entire article in todays WSJ. While I am not qualified in ought but as a citizen—- it strikes me she is brilliant and talented. As such will make a fine addition as we need more intellectuality and and less particism.
I think that she is good. However, I do think that as some have pointed out in the news, by picking her, the court is overly represented by the east coast (elite?) - and I’m one of them (MBA, PHD). Other than representation, I think that she will be smart and caring - but then I’m not who you are trying to placate. You should be considering bringing others into the fold as well - west of the mississippi.
Knowing of her through our Harvard Law School connection, she is a real winner—everything a Justice should be! Obama scores yet again!
Great Choice
A great choice by the President. Other than the fact this is a first time there will be 3 females on the Bench she will surely add to a proper balance among the three great branche.s and not add to the overbearing conservative bloc that has been so blind for so long.
I think she will be a great Supreme Court Judge
It’s wonderful! Our President has made a great choice!
An intelligent choice.
Just read today’s NYTimes lengthy background story on Elena Kagan. How lucky we are that President Obama recognized her superb talents and brainpower and nominated her!
Barack Obama has made a truly fortunate choice. As could be imagined the teabaggers are already firing their darts. The right wing comments are really sorry and a disgrace to this nation. I cannot understand what else they could find to discredit this fine person.
I am delighted to see a liberal Jewish woman appointed to the Supreme Court. I only hope that she isn’t always blaming Israel like some of our other “liberal” politicians.
I am excited and encouraged by the nomination.
I think the president made a very thoughtful choice. Her qualifications are outstanding and her gender will bring a little gender balance to the court.
I am very pleased that the president has nominated a Jewish woman to be an associate justice in the Supreme Court. Although she has not been a judge, her outstanding intellect and career experiences should make her a thoughtful, compassionate and worthwhile addition to the Court. Being a woman and a Jew undoubtedly gives her a different outlook from most of the other justices.
Think she is a good choice!
I love her qualifications but am sure the GOP will try to sink her as they have done with anything the president tries-
TERRIFIC CHOICE
I have no objections to the nomination, but I’d be happier if the President had picked someone not from the northeast and not from Harvard or Yale.
Excellent choice. The only reason she didn’t have the bench experience is because Sen Hatch (R) never brought her nomination to the Court of Appeals for DC up for a hearing in committee. Thus Mr. Justice Roberts got the position and ultimate ly the nomination to the Supreme Court. Furthermore, those saying she didn’t have lawyering experience have not looked at her record. She was with Williams and Connolly for three years.
Wonderful Choice
David Streeter explained my feelings very well.
Superb nomination. The fact that she is Jewish is of no consequence.Extremely well qualified.
I’m one of the liberals who is disappointed at this nomination. Just remember, she has supported all of the Bush era Executive pronouncements and LOST the most issue to our democracy decision debated at the Supreme Court since Bush v. Gore
Don’t let the a holes get personal…her private life should be her own.
EXCELLENT CHOICE
She is a marvelous choice. Her education is very well rounded, her understanding of the law is superb, she is a woman and she is brilliant!
Fantastic! I could not be happier!!!
Elena Kagan is an extraordinary choice—she has the intellect, the personality, the temperament and the commitment to justice that is so needed today. And she has a wonderful sense of humor!
I’m thrilled!
I applaud Ms. Kagan’s nomination to the Supreme Court. I think she will be someone who is uniquely qualified to work with the right-leaning members of the Court to craft decisions based on laws instead of ideology.
Good choice.
Great choice! She will add a great voice to the bench. I’m not sure how I feel about the criticism of adding another MOT. Absolutely no complaints about Kagan, but I think there is something to the critique of a line-up of justices that does not proportionately represent the population. What happened to the Protestants?
I wholeheartedly agree with NJDC statement concerning Obama’s appointment nominee to the Supreme Court and hope that Congress will approve
her quickly!
As a Jewish woman, I am especially proud to see this. As a strong progressive, I do want to hear some of her answers to questions about things I hold dear…such as where she stands on the separation of church and state.
I think it is great that someone with substantial non-judicial experience is on the supreme court.
I have great respect for Barack Obama, and this nomination is another reason I like him so much.
At the present time, I am favoably impressed with her. Let us hope that she is as good as she seems!!
Obama’s choice is a cop-out. Being a Jew does not hide the fact that her record shows that she will move the Court further to the right. Right-Wingers will secretly applaud this bad choice.
So far, I give her a B. I don’t like her position on declaring someone a terrorist and jailing them indefinitely. Is she going to agree to enlarge the powers of the Presidency as she did when she worked for Clinton? Her position on gay rights needs more thought.
A woman and a Jew. Y’ay!
The nominationwas a step in the right direction
I think she’s a very good candidate, but am nervous about there being such a heavy Jewish presence on the court. It may give anti-Semites fodder for their government hatred.
I think that Elana Kagan will be a first rate Justice, an appropriate Justice to sit where Justice Stevens did. Let’s hope that like Justice Stevens she will be there for the next 30 years
I am happy that the court will have someone with a range of experience!
I am pleased that a woman who is a MOT may be joining the Supremes. She seems brilliant and experienced. I read, though, that she supported the decision to detain suspected terrorists indefinitely without trial. Is this true? I do not support that decision. I also read that she is not a liberal. Is this true? If so, I am concerned.
If Benito Obama nominiated her she must be a Progressive, Maoist, or Marxist.
Terrific
Supreme Court nominations deserve a long-term view. On that basis Kagan is not sufficiently progressive for me.t
I am pleased. Looking forward to confirmation.
Wonderful! I am so excited and happy for her and for our country.
Do NOT let the party of NO stop a qualified candidate be stopped to appease their wingnuts!
I believe President Obama’s choice of Elena Kagan is wonderful! She obviously is brilliant; additionally, from what I’ve read about her tenure as Harvard law dean, she is more than willing to listen and weigh opinions from the right, left and center. The fact that she has never held a judgeship is, I believe, a very minor consideration. She was the Harvard law dean, for goodness’ sake! And she’s the sitting solicitor general of the United States. What other qualifications must she have? I’ve known some judges who should never, ever have donned the judicial robes! Hail, Elena!
Very exciting and pleased with the President’s choice!!!
As an almost 50-year-old Jewish woman, who, like Kagan, argued with her rabbi about her bat mitzvah and re-reads Pride and Prejudice ever year, I am thrilled with her nomination.
Great!!
she will be fine.
great choice.
Wonderful choice!
Ms. Kagan is a qualified legal scholar who would bring intelligent deliberation to the court.
Highly intellectual lady and obviously highly regarded by her peers. The Republicans will make it as difficult as possible for her.
Face iut. You like Kagan because she is a Jew. Bu8llshit! Thius liberal pig is typical of what is destroying the USA and mustr be stopped!
I consider her to be an outstandingly qualified candidate and I can only hope the Senate has the good sense to confrm her appointment.
I approve wholeheartedly…an unbiased mind that can allow for a wide range of opinions…what we need more of on the Supreme Court.
I think she is terrific, but time will tell. Of course she needs to be confirmed first. Then hopefully she can take on Roberts and Alito.
I am delighted by the President’s choice. I agree with your analysis completely!
As a lawyers who has practiced before the US Supreme Court I am quite happy with the nomination. The fact that she is being attacked from the Right and the Left suggests this is a good nomination!
Great. Now we can confidently admit that President Barrack Obama is supportive of the Jewish Community of America. With the appointment of Elena Kagan, this support will be further enhanced.
Since I do not think a real progressive will get selected by Obama I applaud the choice of Ms. Kagan!
an historic choice to balance the Court
Finally a non-judge choice!! Excellent perspective can only ensue.
I am excited about the prospects both as a Democrat and a Jew.
Please with the nomination. It’s will be great to see more women on the Court.
Its nice to have a President who seeks out highly qualified candidates, in this case an academic, to this coveted post. From what I’ve read about her, she should be an outstanding Jurist.
Happy to have another woman on this important bench - impressed with her credentials and worldview - in our diverse nation it is important to have a person who values the individual and the law. Thank you President Obama for a wise choice.
GREAT CHOICE OBAMA IS RIGHT
There are many reasons why I am pleased with the selection of Elena Kagan. Foremost among them is the prospect of a brilliant, open minded Justice on the Supreme Court for many years to come.
Great choice!!
I find it very telling that the comments by the right-winger (see below) lack any substance ,use only pejoratives and are misspelled .

Face iut. You like Kagan because she is a Jew. Bu8llshit! Thius liberal pig is typical of what is destroying the USA and mustr be stopped!
It’s great to have another woman on the bench, wow 1/3 of the court! And not just any woman, but one uniquely qualified for the job. She is an excellent choice, may her confirmation be smooth.
Great choice !!! PRESIDENT Obama is an extremely intelligent, decent human being . I trust his judgment very much and KNOW he has made a well reasoned decision.
Kagan will be a great judge. It bothers me to no end that the Republicans wouldn’t let her nomination by Clinton even be voted on and now say she has no judicial experience. It’s a low blow.
A superior choice. I love Ruth Bader Ginsburg, too, but she may opt to resign while President Obama is still in office, if so, I would like to see Elizabeth Warren take her seat. We need some progressive voices on the Supreme Court
I could not be more enthusiastic about a Supreme Court choice. Of course she’s well-qualified and experienced. She’s also rooted in a justice sensibility that so many of us share—including a respect for efforts to improve things for working people. May she live to 120. A wonderful choice.
I never thought we’d have three Jews on the Court simultaneously, or three women. This is wonderful, and says much about how much of the country is changing. Kagan is so very qualified that no one can possibly say she is a token nomination. I am delighted.
I wonder how the Tea Party will feel toward this nomination in our “Christian Country”
I am disgusted and enraged by this choice. I am a proud Jewish woman but Kagan’s religious affiliation is irrelevant to her appropriateness as a choice for the nation’s highest court. She is a slap in the face to Justice Stevens who leaves behind a legacy of progressive decisions and was a true champion of civil rights.
For a supposedly liberal president to replace one of the most liberal members of the bench with a conservative is simply inexcusable. She is pro death penalty, likely anti choice, espouses unitary executive theory which has been completely debunked by legitimate legal scholars, supports violating our constitution and international law, pro gun, and supports indefinite civil confinement without just cause.
This is a deeply disconcerting choice for the court, and once again shows Obama forsakes his base repeatedly to try and win favor with Republicans who will not support him no matter what he does. I was an avid Obama supporter in 2008; now I do not know how I can vote for him again.
My congrats to Ms. Kagan. Good choice!!
Let’s hear it for another smart woman!! What can the “Party Of No” say now? They’ve supported her in the past.
Fabulous! Mazel Tov to all of us- Americans.
We need more liberal judges in all our courts to balance the tide away from the consersatives. Kagan is a wise choise for the U.S. Surpreme Court.
