Haaretz is reporting that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has praised President Barack Obama’s peace initiative and believes that a settlement “that would give the Palestinians their state…while granting Israel recognition and security…” is “within reach.”
Israel has also begun to reach out to several Arab states in an attempt to jump start negotiations with the Palestinian Authority after the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech at Bar Ilan University on Sunday.
In his speech Netanyahu, for the first time since taking office, expressed support for a Palestinian state. However, the speech struck a nerve with several Arab governments, prompting Israel to reassure states that Netanyahu is serious about making peace.
