Earlier today, Vice President Joseph Biden landed in Israel, making him the highest-ranking member of the Obama Administration to visit the country. Members of different Israeli political parties have noted their support and enthusiasm for Biden’s trip.
Ehud Barak, Defense Minister and Labor Party Chairman, stated:
[Biden is] coming here to make sure the political process gets back on track…I hope it will be a productive week and that it starts practical, if preliminary steps of the political process.
Tzipi Livni, the current opposition leader and head of the Kadima Party, agreed. She stated that Biden’s visit to Israel denotes the important relationship between the two countries:
There is a mutual interest between Israel and the United States of America. It is more than friendship - it is friendship plus mutual interest, and it is bipartisan. The understanding that Iran should not have a nuclear weapon, plus the need to solve the conflict with the Palestinians according to the idea of two states for two peoples is something that represents the Israeli interest and the American interest.
