A recent decision by Israel’s Transportation Ministry to “hebraize” road signs has sparked fierce debate in Israel. Beginning this week, road signs in Israel will only feature the Hebrew names of cities.
For example, signs pointing to Jerusalem will read “Yerushalayim” in Hebrew, Arabic and English.
According to Ynet, the plan to standardize road signs has been in the works for over a year.
Two of Ynet’s op-ed columnists, Hanoch Daum and Ronny Shaked, have come down on either side of the issue.
Daum believes that the different names on the road signs reflects divisions within Israeli society, writing that they “constitute a statement. They reflect the views of some of the Arabs who reside in Israel.”
Shaked believes just the opposite, writing that the Transportation Ministry has more pressing matters to attend to, since Arabic “is an official language…why not use the Arabic names of cities…why not give Israeli Arabs the respect they deserve?”
Nice information .
