Iranian Swimmer Refuses to Race Israeli

Ynet is reporting that Iranian swimmer Mohammad Alirezael has refused to swim in the same heat as Israeli Mickey Malul at the Word Championships in Rome this week. Alirezael won’t even show up poolside for the 50 meter race.

This is not the first time Alirezael has done so—at the 2008 Olympic qualifiers, he withdrew from the 100 meter breaststroke because Israeli Tom Beeri was participating in the race.

One day before Alirezael pulled out of the race, Israeli swimmer Itai Chammah swam the 100 meter backstroke against an Iraqi swimmer who apparently did not know Chammah was in the heat.
