LAJJ Editor-in-Chief’s Step-by-Step Guide for the GOP: How to Keep Repelling Jews

Rob Eshman, editor-in-chief of the Los Angeles Jewish Journal, published an op-ed that outlined recent actions by the Republican Party that demonstrate why the GOP continues to repel Jews. Eshman wrote:

Jews are not liberal zombies. The record shows that they use their votes to reward candidates or parties they believe adhere not to certain labels, but to certain values.

Eshman’s steps for repelling Jews—which reflect the GOP’s recent behavior—include:

Step 1: Let Ideology Trump Common Sense

Step 2: Assume We’re Stupid

Step 3: Don’t Compromise

Step 4: Avoid Nuance

Step 5: Attack Government Itself

Eshman concluded by advising Republicans that if they “want the kind of landslide Jewish numbers Democrats rack up, find candidates who promote strong, effective and fiscally sound government that provides security for the nation, opportunity to the entrepreneur and help to the needy.” However, the GOP’s behavior during the debt ceiling debate indicates that Eshman’s advice is likely to fall on deaf ears.

With the steps that Eshman cited, there should be little doubt as to why Jews remain overwhelmingly supportive of President Barack Obama and the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party is the only party with a platform that shares and advances the values of most American Jews.
