JTA reported that five Members of Congress - Reps. Steven Rothman (D-NJ), Ron Klein (D-FL), Shelley Berkley (D-NV), Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) and Dan Burton (R-IN) – sent a letter to British Prime Minister David Cameron asking him to clarify his remarks comparing Gaza to a “prison camp.” The Members asked the Prime Minister if his remarks reflected his personal views, or were in fact the official position of the United Kingdom.
According to JTA the letter “blamed the problems in Gaza entirely on Hamas and stated Israel’s willingness to talk to the Palestinians.” The letter noted:
A central foreign policy goal for both of our nations is the achievement of a peace agreement in the Middle East that allows the Jewish State of Israel to live in peace and prosperity alongside a viable Palestinian State. In this regard, we believe that your recent comment in Turkey equating Gaza with a ‘prison camp’ is detrimental to the peace process and ignores the history and reality of the situation in Gaza.

The Br PM should be more sensitive in making such a remark and should explain himself fully. Such remarks would create more complications and misunderstanding against the peace efforts underway.
