Clinton on Flotilla to Gaza: Not “Necessary or Useful”

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton expressed her opposition to the planned flotilla that may seek to break Israel’s naval barricade of the Gaza Strip.

Clinton stated on Thursday:

Well, we do not believe that the flotilla is a necessary or useful effort to try to assist the people of Gaza. Just this week, the Israeli Government approved a significant commitment to housing in Gaza. There will be construction materials entering Gaza and we think that it’s not helpful for there to be flotillas that try to provoke actions by entering into Israeli waters and creating a situation in which the Israelis have the right to defend themselves.

The flotilla threatens Israel’s security and makes it more difficult for Israel to stop the flow of weapons into the Gaza Strip. The State Department has already issued a warning to discourage Americans from participating in the flotilla because it is an unnecessary provocation. Clinton’s statement is just the latest example of the Obama Administration standing with Israel when it comes to securing its citizens, as it did last year when a the first flotilla incident occurred.
