Charendoff: Good Jews and Bad People

Mark Charendoff in The New York Jewish Week, responds to the recent corruption arrests in New Jersey, and wonders if the haredi community has the wrong view of state law.

Charendoff draws on personal experiences, and what he describes as “a pervasive notion” in the haredi community to “view state law as trite, flawed—unimportant at best….”

The focus of the column expands to include other high profile instances of “flouting of laws” including the recent rioting in Israel’s ultra-Orthodox communities.

Charendoff ends the column posing a question and a challenge to Orthodox leaders.

“Is it really possible that we believe we are in greater danger from women appearing at the pulpit than from rabbis appearing at a perp walk? Perhaps it is time to stop waiting for the perfection of the world that will come…and engage in perfecting ourselves…”
