In his speech at Tehran University, Ayatollah Khamenei urged the opposition to accept the results of last week’s contested election, saying “Iran would not cheat” and street protests “question the principles of election and democracy.”
He then took it a step farther, telling the audience that the election displays Iranian unity and the perception that there are divisions in Iranian politics is the result of efforts made by Western governments and “media belonging to Zionists, evil media.”
“Despite all the diversions, our people are faithful,” he said. “The youth are confused. Being away from spirituality has caused confusion. They don’t know what to do.”
