Today, JTA reports that a cartoon, called “hideously anti-Semitic” by the ADL, ran in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and other publications.

An excerpt:

Jewish groups have denounced a cartoon by a prize-winning political cartoonist as anti-Semitic.

Pat Oliphant’s cartoon, published Wednesday, shows a headless figure goose-stepping while pushing a large Star of David with fangs and pursuing a tiny woman carrying a child labeled “Gaza.” The syndicated cartoon appeared in newspapers around the world.

“Pat Oliphant’s outlandish and offensive use of the Star of David in combination with Nazi-like imagery is hideously anti-Semitic,” Abraham Foxman, the Anti-Defamation League national director, said in a statement. “It employs Nazi imagery by portraying Israel as a jack-booted, goose-stepping headless apparition. The implication is of an Israeli policy without a head or a heart. “

Oliphants cartoon is idiotic but free speech is the higher value. We can’t have on the one hand, the WJC condemning the passage of a UN Resolution against Religious Defamation (which may include legitimate criticisms against radical Islam) while seeking to suppress an otherwise ignorant cartoon that defames us. In any event, I’d hate to have anyone tell me I can’t draw whatever cartoon I like, such as this take off on Oliphants:

Not as well drawn but more nuanced I think…

Offensive, to say the least - what are the editors of the Washington Post thinking?  And - the NY Times picked this up, too?  Eugene Meyer’s descendents (Katherine Graham) and the Sulzberger family - formerly Jewish, all - d.

It is the affliction of liberals to confuse a total lack of moral criteria with open mindedness and tolerance.  I am a Democrat and I am appalled by support of Hamas, an organization vowed to obliterate Israel by any means possible, by fellow progressives.  Political correctness will bury this country.

It is revolting and hideous.  There should be a formal rejection and retraction

Eve Elberg | March 27, 2009 – 2:40 pm

What’s next, Israelis using the blood of Gaza’s children for matza? Seems like it’s pretty close. What a politically correct way to hate Jews.

Oliphant has a history of such cartoons employing the “Jew as Nazis” motif. More needs to be done to expose what in fact he is…..

Simply deplorable.  It is Hamas that refuses to recognize Israel’s right to exist and calls for its destruction.

b strauss | March 27, 2009 – 4:17 pm

just another example of an anti-semite who just doesn’t get it.  Disgraceful in 2009 America, or anywhere for that matter.

Ellen Schor | March 27, 2009 – 4:40 pm

Why is the goose-stepper headless?  He is certainly more ominous this way.  Why does the world no longer condemn terrorism?  Has the world just gotten used to it, as a reasonable way of murdering people, especially Jews?

J. Redblood | March 27, 2009 – 4:46 pm

While Oliphant has the freedom of free speech, so do I and the cartoon clearly is anti-semitic.  It also infers that Oliphant is pro-Hamas and for the murder of Jews.

That’s exactly how much of the world views Israel and its occupation of Palestine.  The sooner Israel leaves the West Bank, Gaza, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights the better.  Israel still has time to do that but unfortunately has no will as it considers the whole land of Palestine Jewish and God given!  The so called peace process is nothing but a “process” designed to take decades while it re-enforces its colonies.

I am not a fan of the NY Times because of their anti-Israel policy. I have tried to find where they printed the Oliphant Cartoon but without success. Can anyone direct me to the issue, page etc? How can I recommend giving up a subscription without having the facts?

Norman Green | March 28, 2009 – 1:06 pm

Unwittingly, Abe Foxman got part of it right.  The implication of the cartoon indeed is “of an Issraeli policy without a head or a heart.”  Sadly, that is a completely accurate portrayal of the policy in question.

Rosaline Diamant | March 28, 2009 – 1:25 pm

Doesn’t anyone at The NY Times or Wash. Post think there might be a way of expressing an opinion about Hamas war against Israel without printing a revolting antisemitic cartoon?
