Today, Marc R. Stanley, Chairman of the National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC), released the following statement:

NJDC joins the country in mourning the loss of the “lion of the Senate.” Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA) was widely viewed as one of the most effective legislators of our time. Kennedy was a great friend to the Jewish community and a tireless champion of social justice issues; our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this difficult time.

Kennedy dedicated much of his life to ensuring that affordable health care is available for all Americans. The greatest tribute that we can bestow is to thoughtfully, but urgently, enact comprehensive health insurance reform.

It is the ethical thing to do.  We need universal health care.

It is a blessing to help those who need help, and the most effective way today in this wealthy country is to pass comprehensive health insurance for all Americans.

After 60 years of fighting for health care, we must honor Ted Kennedy who devoted his entire life to health care reform. As we enter our holiest days, we as Jews must commit ourselves to the moral issue that lack of health care is anti religious and does not represent what we Jews have stood for through the centuries. All Americans must have affordable health care. We must stand together to make this change for the good of our Democratic nation.  The time is now!  We Jews must remember that we are to live a mitzvah every day   and it is our duty to support a comprehensive affordable health bill for all!
