Health Care Reform is Urgently Needed

Ira N. Forman, CEO of the National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC), released the following statement:

An estimated 46 million Americans are without health insurance and millions more have inadequate health insurance coverage. We must start finding solutions to solve our health care crisis. With the leadership of the President Barack Obama, the prospect for real health care reform has never looked better.

Obama noted in his speech to the American Medical Association on Monday, “We are not a nation that lets hardworking families go without coverage, or turns its back on those in need.  We’re a nation that cares for its citizens.  We look out for one another.  That’s what makes us the United States of America.  We need to get this done.”

As Jewish Democrats, we recognize the wisdom in the President’s words and appreciate his vision. NJDC is ready to partner with the administration to face the enormous challenges that such necessary reform will encompass.

Agreed that America doesn’t turn her back on those in need.  We do care for our citizens and we do look out for one another.
So - looking at the numbers - of the 46M without health insurance - how many are NOT citizens?  I’ve read reports of anywhere from 8M to 15M.  There is another large portion of people who don’t have insurance, but they don’t WANT insurance - including some of the young who want to spend their money elsewhere.
As far as looking out for one another - that is EXACTLY what charitable giving is all about, for which this Congress and Administration are talking about removing tax credits.
I definitely appreciate the President’s words.  But I’m interpreting their meaning quite differently.
