According to recent polling data in a Forward editorial, a majority of Americans under 50 support President Barack Obama’s public option initiative while a majority over 50 oppose. The Forward rightly points out that the majority of Americans over 50 are already recipients of government healthcare (Medicaid) and that their concerns are most likely rooted in their complacency with their situation.
But within the context of Jewish values there is a major problem with this situation. As The Forward writes, “Our tradition implores us to care for the elderly, as every moral people should. But our tradition also implores us to worry about the next generation, and the next. If bubbe and zayde work only to protect their own entitlement, their grandchildren will inherit a much sicker world.”
