Today, Ira N. Forman, Executive Director of the National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC), released the following statement:

The National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC) applauds Justice David Souter’s nearly two decades of service on the Supreme Court of the United States. Throughout Souter’s career, he has shown independence and a profound respect for the constitution and the integrity of the institution he served. Among other notable decisions, it was Souter’s vote that preserved the fundamental right protected in Roe v Wade.

With Souter’s retirement from the Supreme Court, President Barack Obama will have an extraordinary opportunity to have a profound impact on his legacy at the beginning of his presidency. We should remember that Souter’s impact on our nation’s laws has long outlasted the tenure of President George H. W. Bush by whom he was appointed.

NJDC is confident that Obama will nominate a fair-minded justice to the Supreme Court who is committed to constitutional values and protecting the rights and liberties enshrined therein.

I wish David Souter a healthy and pleasant retirement. I expect Pres. Obama to appoint a thoughtful, reasonable, and empathic person to fill his seat. We are so lucky to have Pres. Obama at this time.

I hope that Pres. Obama will nominate a fair, honest, compassionate justice who will preserve our rights, privacy and provide equality under the law. This is an opportunity to counter the inferior justices appointed by the Bushes condemning our country to the forces of reactonary political agenda long after their tenure in office. We hope that the Obama appointee will attempt to level the playing field and help the poor and vulnerable.

Believe Souter hated the way Bush (under the Vice President) ran the country for eight years and as soon as he saw things are better decided time to retire for left wing candidate.
