NJDC Challenges Rep. Cantor on Limbaugh’s Nazi Rhetoric

Aaron Keyak — August 7, 2009 – 11:54 am | Abusive Holocaust Rhetoric | Congress | Republicans Comments (4) Add a comment

Today, David A. Harris, President of the National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC), released the following statement:

Recently, Representative Eric Cantor (D-VA), the lone Jewish Republican in Congress, said “we need … the Rush Limbaughs” in the GOP.

Yesterday, Limbaugh compared President Barack Obama and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to Hitler – and today his website has the logo of the president’s health insurance reform plan morphing into a Nazi graphic replete with swastikas.

Limbaugh’s horrifying use of Hitler references and swastikas is deeply offensive and wildly inappropriate, and it has to stop - now. Cantor is wrong; we do not need anyone who abuses the memory of the Holocaust in our political discourse, period. It is incumbent upon Cantor and the Republican Party to condemn Limbaugh and these utterly contemptible tactics.

Cantor: after Limbaugh’s website antics today and comments yesterday, do you really still think you “need” Limbaugh?

Mr. Cantor’s willingness to garner support from the likes of Limbaugh is contemptible.  I understand politicians need to appeal to their base but there must be some sense of limit and some willingness to accept that with political leadership comes certain fundamental obligations.  Here the obligation is to condemn the extremist and incendiary provocations of Limbaugh and his like.  Mr. Cantor, as a Jew and as a political leader, should be ashamed of himself.  I am increasingly discouraged by the poor quality of leadership in this country.  I am afraid we are in deep trouble as a nation.

Rush Limbaugh is race bating and you - as a Republican - should take a stand against his tactics. If you are scared to say something because it will hurt your reelection - take a few minutes to think about your situation and do something proactive.  If you lose - you lose.  If you win by staying quiet - well what have you won.  Life is short and our actions or lack of action defines us.  Don’t let this define you.

First I want to commend the National Jewish Democratic Council for calling upon Republican Congressman Eric Cantor to repudiate Rush Limbaugh, who stated that more Limbaughs are needed in the Republican Party.

As a Jew whose family came to America to escape Nazi Germany I disagree with your criticism of Washington Democratic Congressman Brian Baird who said “What we’re seeing right now is close to Brown Shirt tactics,” in regards to the right-wingers who are disrupting the town meetings of Democratic members of Congress to protest President Obama’s health care legislation. These people are indeed fascist brown shirts. Just before the Nazis came to power in Germany, they disrupted meetings of their opponents just as the current fascists are doing in this country. These people must be condemned for what they are, and their tactics must not be tolerated. As for Jews like Eric Cantor, they are of the same mindset of those Jews in Europe who served on the Judenrats in the ghettos who made deals with the Nazis and sold out their own people.
