Representative Howard Berman (D-CA), ranking Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, came to President Obama’s defense on Thursday, disputing claims that Obama is losing touch with American Jews due to his alleged policies on the Israel-Palestinian peace process. The Los Angeles Times reported Berman saying that “[t]he Republicans, in their never-ending quest to try and persuade Jews to shift their voting, have jumped on this to try to exacerbate that split.”
Calling out likely Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, Berman said, “I consider Romney’s comment that this president threw Israel under the bus to be the most outrageous, over-the-top statement.”
Berman has publicly supported Obama’s policies announced in last Thursday’s speech. According to his statement released on May 19th:
President Obama’s speech is an eloquent and inspiring affirmation of American values as applied to the movements for sweeping transformation of the Middle East. In particular, he has given Syrian President Asad a stark choice, reform or go.
