The White House released a statement today condemning the “brutal terrorist attacks” in southern Israel and extending their condolences to the victims.

We condemn the brutal terrorist attacks in southern Israel today in the strongest terms.  Our deepest condolences go to the victims, their families and loved ones, and we wish those injured a speedy recovery.  The U.S. and Israel stand united against terror and we hope that those behind this attack will be brought to justice swiftly.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton joined in the White House’s condemnation:

The United States condemns today’s attacks in southern Israel and all acts of terrorism in the strongest terms. These brutal and cowardly attacks appear to be premeditated acts of terrorism against innocent civilians. Our deepest condolences go out to the victims, their families and loved ones.

This violence only underscores our strong concerns about the security situation in the Sinai Peninsula. Recent commitments by the Egyptian Government to address the security situation in the Sinai are important and we urge the Egyptian Government to find a lasting resolution.

The United States and Israel are united in the fight against terror. We hope that those involved in the planning of these gruesome attacks will be brought to swift justice. We stand by Israel as our friend, partner, and ally—now and always.

The US Embassy in Israel posted a statement this morning in response to the “gruesome” attack:

In light of what’s happening near Eilat, our deepest condolences go out to the victims, their families and loved ones, of what appears to be a brutal and cowardly act of terrorism in southern Israel. We wish those injured a speedy recovery. The American people and the Israeli people stand united against terror and we hope that those involved in the planning of this gruesome attack will be brought to swift justice.

Many Democratic members of Congress condemned the attack and offered support to the people of Israel. Some of their statements include:

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA):

Americans stand together in condemning these terror attacks in Israel and offering condolences to the loved ones of those who lost their lives.

In Congress, we stand united to ensure Israel’s strength and to work toward an enduring peace between Israel and her neighbors.

Ranking Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee Representative Howard Berman (D-CA):

I am alarmed by today’s heinous terrorist attack against Israel. The terrorists’ deadly coordinated attack against civilian targets demonstrates that the threat posed by Hamas and their supporters remains strong. This week, Hamas went so far as to shut down protests in Gaza against Syrian President Bashar Assad.  The Syria-Hamas-Iran partnership of murder must be held accountable for their crimes.  With ever-increasing instability taking shape on Israel’s southern and northern borders Israel must remain vigilant.  I stand ready to assist Israel defend itself against all terrorist aggression.

Representative Jerrold Nadler (D-NY):

I join with all civilized people in condemning today’s savage terrorist attacks on Israel. In one of the attacks, terrorists fired an anti-tank rocket at a private car killing six people, four from the same family. The attacks also employed roadside bombs, RPGs, mortars, and one incident in which terrorists in a car fired on a bus, wounding seven passengers before racing off and shooting at other vehicles…. The United States must continue to stand with, and support, Israel, our only reliable, democratic ally in this very strategic region.

Representative Steve Rothman (D-NJ):

My condolences go out to the families and friends of the Israelis who were murdered in Southern Israel today and to all of the people of Jewish State of Israel. I strongly condemn these horrific terrorist attacks and call on the Palestinian Authority and the Egyptian government to immediately denounce this brutal violence. Those who committed these horrendous acts must be swiftly brought to justice and dealt with severely.

The terrorist attacks by the Sinai border highlight the importance of ensuring that the borders between Israel, Egypt, and Gaza are fully monitored and secured. Much more must be done to keep these borders safe. Clearly, Egypt must take greater steps to prevent terrorists from crossing its border.

With the efforts by the Palestinian Authority and Egypt to improve ties with terrorist groups like Hamas, today’s terrorist attacks remind us that trying to make peace with murderous terrorists only leads to more death and suffering - especially for Israel.

With an uncertain future in the Middle East, it is more important than ever for the United States to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Jewish State of Israel.

Representative Eliot Engel (D-NY):

The United States stands shoulder to shoulder with the Israeli people, as must the rest of the world.  Until Palestinians cease using terrorism, there cannot be peace in the Middle East, nor a Palestinian state. Countries around the world should remember this before voting in the United Nations General Assembly on the Palestinian request for recognition of their statehood next month.  Premeditated acts of terrorism are not the path to acceptance by the international community.  The violence must stop, and must stop now. We should all keep the victims of this senseless attack, and their families, in our thoughts and prayers.

Representative Donna Edwards (D-MD):

I join all Americans and the international community in condemning today’s heinous attacks in southern Israel. The loss of innocent life and the harm to those injured is never justifiable and must not be tolerated. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the people of Israel.

David Weprin, the Democratic candidate for the special election in New York’s 9th Congressional district, also released a statement:

My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families of those killed and hurt in a senseless act of terror in Eilat today….I call upon the PA to quickly condemn this terror attack and immediately turn over the terrorists to the Israeli government….

[Israelis] give me inspiration and indeed inspire millions around the world with their determined way of life. I would like to extend my condolences to the families of those murdered and to wish a refuah shleima to those injured. My condolences also to Prime Minister Netanyahu and the entire nation as they grapple with yet another tragedy. The nation of Israel will live on.
